Can I use other lenses with my A-Cam than the one delivered with the camera?
Yes, You can use any lenses, covering Super 16, in C-mount. What You must have in mind is,
since the standard viewfinder of the A-Cam does not "see" through the lens and is designed for the 9 mm Kinoptik lens,
that comes with the camera, it will not cover the same area as a lens with another focal length.
Viewfinders designed for other focal-lengths will be in our product range soon.
Why a C-mount lens, not PL or Arri bayonet?
In order to make the smallest camera in the world, we wanted the shortest flange focal distance (17,5 mm compared to 52 mm).
A PL-mount would also make the camera more clumsy and expensive.
What does "parallel-mounted non-reflex viewfinder" mean?
A parallel-mounted non-reflex viewfinder is as the term indicates, mounted parallely to the lens and therefore causes a minor parallax error. This way it's possible to use an extremely short back-focus length, which makes the camera approx. 3 cm shorter. It also makes the viewfinder flicker-free in opposite to reflex viewfinders.
Why not a reflex-viewfinder?
Because it would make the camera more clumsy and expensive. With a wide lens like the 9 mm, the parallax-error is negliable. The great depth of field makes the focusing easy. A flicker free viewfinder is also a great advantage.
How is it possible to sell a professional Super16
camera including optics for the price a DV camcorder?
By stripping the mechanical and electronic construction down to the absolute essential functions, using modern production and design tools and choose convenient materials. That means no reflex viewfinder, no timecode, no magnesium, no light-meter - Just a Super 16 film camera, ready to use out of the box!
What is Super 16?
Super 16 is a single perforated film that uses the maximum image area available conventional 16 mm film. Super 16 has the aspect ratio of 1,66:1. This equals 15:9 and is close to the new HDTV format of 16:9.
Super 16 also offers the option for blow-up to 35 mm for cinematic release. For film- and TV producers, the economic flexibility of Super 16 in meeting both today's and tomorrows needs plays strongly in the decision-making process, especially when considering the option of film vs. video.
The Super 16 format was developed by Swedish cinematographer Rune Ericson. He was awarded with an Oscar for this innovation in 2001.
Where and how do I develop and transfer my material?
Today, You have to turn to the established labs and telecine facilities, available around the globe. Within a year Ikonoskop will provide a world-wide processing and transfer service for 16 mm material. Hopefully, we will provide these services to a lower price than available today.
